The essence of nursing
Quality indicators refer to standardized, evidence-based measures of health care quality which can be used with the available inpatient administrative data to track and measure clinical outcomes and performance. Quality indicators are usually factual, and they can be used to identify differences in the quality of care which is provided to outpatients as well as an inpatient basis. They are used to determine the kind of services which a given health care center is catering to the clients who are patients in this case. The quality indicators can be used to determine the weaknesses and strengths of a given institution, and through those indicators used by the organization, one can make improvements to service delivery.
Quality indicators are developed and maintained by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality with the aim of determining the progress of a given medical institution and gauging the performance as well as identifying the necessary changes needed. The measures can be categorized into different modules such as the inpatient quality indicators, the prevention quality indicators, the pediatric quality indicators and the patient safety indicators. They are all used to gauge the progress of healthcare service delivery and pinpoint weaknesses as well as where changes need to be made to improve the quality of services.
Prevention Quality Indicators
The prevention quality indicator is one of the indicators which can be used to improve service delivery. It is a set of measures which can be used with a healthcare organization. Inpatient uses the discharge data to determine the quality of care for ambulatory care sensitive conditions. The indicator applies to good outpatient care which can be used to prevent the need for hospitalization. It can as well be sued to carry out early intervention to prevent complications. Also, the indicator is population-based and can be adjusted for covariates.
Prevention quality indicators need to be addressed in my current institution as some illness and cases of patients we receive find themselves in such conditions due to lack of awareness of what they can do to prevent sickness. The indicator provides insight into a given society healthcare system. Patients with a given condition such as diabetes may be hospitalized if their conditions are not well monitored, thus there is need to prevent manageable diseases before they get out of hand (Patel, 2016). The organization needs to take precaution to avoid other complications from happening. With high-quality community services, hospitalizations cases can be prevented since the community will be aware of how to go about prevention of illness by staying safe at all times.
Hospitals receive a large number of patients each day, and the number of those who need to be admitted is growing each day which leads to congestion in hospital. With a large number of patients, there is a possibility that the quality of services which the organization will provide will not meet the required standards. The prevention quality indicator can be used as a screening tool to help solve the potential of healthcare service delivery.
With the indicator in place, it is therefore easy for the organization to improve service delivery. The screening tool can be used to provide insightful information about the needs of the community and the conditions which the community members face as far as healthcare is concerned. Therefore, there is need to implement the prevention quality indicator to help improve healthcare service delivery (Davies, 2017).
